Voting in the 2022 Election

With Election Day approaching, I thought it might be helpful to provide a rundown of key dates, information, and links to resources to make it easier to take part in this critical civic process. I hope you find it useful.

Key Dates for the 2022 General Election

Nov. 1 is the last day to apply for a mail-in ballot.

Nov. 8 is Election Day and the last day to vote by mail. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Voting by Mail

Any qualified voter may apply for a mail-in ballot or absentee ballot. Absentee ballots require you to list a reason for not voting in person; regular mail ballots do not.

Applications for mail and absentee ballots can be requested online or you can download the form and return it to your County Voter Registration Office no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

After you receive your ballot, fill it out following the instructions. Sign the declaration and mail or deliver the ballot to your County Voter Registration Office.

If you have an emergency (such as an unexpected illness or disability or last-minute absence from your municipality) you may still be able to get a ballot after the deadline. Here’s information about how to get an emergency absentee ballot.

Voting in Person on Nov. 8

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The state Polling Place Search tool will help you locate your polling place.

Voters who are voting for the first time in their election district will be required to show an ID. Acceptable IDs for first-time voters:

  • Driver’s license
  • U.S. passport
  • Military, student or employee ID
  • Voter registration card
  • Firearm permit
  • Current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck or government check
  • Any ID issued by the Commonwealth or federal government
